Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychodynamic counselling?
Psychodynamic counselling is based on the core principle that the unconscious mind holds onto painful memories and feelings which are difficult for the conscious mind to process. These unconscious feelings can impact how we feel and behave and may be acted out in our relationships with others. The aim of psychodynamic therapy is to bring the unconscious mind into consciousness and by doing so helping you to understand where some of your deep rooted feelings may stem from. With this insight and self awareness brings opportunity for change.

How do I get started?
If you are interested in arranging an initial session please contact me by telephone or email. I offer a free 20 minute phone consultation which gives us the opportunity to talk through your current situation and discuss whether counselling could be helpful for you. If you'd like to we will then arrange an initial consultation where I will invite you to discuss what brings you to counselling and allow you the space to ask any questions you may have about the counselling process. If you are happy to continue with counselling we will set up a second session and from then on meet once a week, at the same time each week.

Counselling for Children and Young People
I offer a first stage initial consultation for parents of 50 minutes which can take place in person, via Zoom or over the phone. The consultation is open for both parents to attend. During this session I will take a history of your child/young person and identify what has brought them to counselling at this time.

The second stage is an initial session with your child or young person. During this consutation we will explore what counselling is and how we will work together. Overall my aim is to gain a comprehensive understanding of your child's current situation, their developmental history as well as their hopes and wishes for counselling.

If following the consultation we agree that this is the most suitable approach for your child/young person we will then meet weekly on the same day and time for an agreed period of time. These sessions will be subject to regular review.

Utilising techniques such as play and creative therapy your child will have the opportunity to explore and express their thoughts and feelings. They will develop coping strategies and techniques as well as a greater understanding of emotions, relationships and behaviour. This approach will ensure that your child is able to use their voice to feel heard and understood and empowered to navigate life's challenges with increased confidence and a greater sense of resilience.

Sessions for parents
I offer sessions for parents who would like support with reflecting on their relationship with their child/children and/or their children's behaviour. A reflective approach to parenting can help you to understand your children and their behaviour and build your relationship and connection with them.

How many sessions will I have?
Each session lasts for 50 minutes and takes place weekly. The number of sessions depend on the individual and this is something we can discuss together at your initial appointment.

Where do the sessions take place?
My counselling practice is located in a private and quiet studio at the end of my garden. The room is also equipped for creative and play therapy.

Fees and availability
I currently offer day time appointments on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. I provide after school appointments for children and young people Wednesday to Friday.

An initial consultation is 75 minutes and my fee for this is £105. My fee for weekly counselling sessions is £70 for a 50 minute session.
